PARKERSBURG — The School Board of Wood County Schools held a special meeting Friday to interview five superintendent candidates.
A Wood County Schools press release said the board has chosen to select four nominees as finalists: Richard Duncan, Michael Fling, Walter Saunders and Christie Willis, with a final public forum on Monday and the board’s final decision expected on Tuesday. .
The press release gave a short biography of each candidate.
¯ Duncan, of Reedy, is the Superintendent of Schools for Roane County Schools. He holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, a master’s degree in finance, and a doctorate in mechanical and aerospace engineering, all from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He holds a master’s degree in leadership studies (school administration) and a certificate in secondary education, both from Marshall University. He has 10 years of teaching experience.
¯ Fling, of Belleville, is the assistant superintendent of support services for Wood County Schools. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and Music Education from Glenville State College, a Master of Arts and Educational Leadership from West Virginia University, and a Superintendent’s Commendation from Wheeling Jesuit University. He has 30 years of teaching experience.
¯ Saunders, of Wheeling, is the director of federal programs and assessment for Ohio County Schools. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from West Liberty State College and a master’s degree in instructional leadership from West Virginia University. He has 26 years of teaching experience.
¯ Willis, of Vienna, is the assistant superintendent of teaching, learning and accountability for Wood County Schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from WVU-P, a master’s degree in instructional leadership from WVU, and certification in learning disabilities and mental disorders from Ohio Valley University. She has 24 years of teaching experience.
The school board will hold two meetings next week. The first meeting will be a public forum and will be held Monday at 6 p.m. at the Wood County Technical Center at 1515 Blizzard Drive in Parkersburg. The second meeting will be a regular board meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Jefferson Elementary Center at 1103 Plum Street in Parkersburg. Both meetings will be open to the public and will be streamed online.
During Monday’s public forum, the four finalists will have the opportunity to address the public and answer questions from members of the community.
At Tuesday’s regular council meeting, the council is expected to announce and vote on its choice for superintendent. The new superintendent will replace current superintendent Will Hosaflook, who recently accepted a position as superintendent with Jackson County Schools and will begin July 1.
The meeting will also include a presentation on online payments and student recognition from the All State Choir, the Parkersburg South High School Swim Team, and the Marietta Times Regional Spelling Bee winner.
