Pacific Oaks College Launches New Bilingual Licensing Programs in Spanish and Mandarin – Pasadena Now
Pacific Oaks College is proud to present its new bilingual Spanish and Mandarin authorization programs at its Pasadena and San Jose campuses as well as online, officially launched in January 2022.
âCalifornia is home to the largest population of children in the country who learn English in addition to their first language. Access to quality bilingual programs is central to our state’s efforts to achieve educational equity, âsaid Dr. Jack Paduntin, President of Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School. âBilingual licensing programs are a growing demand among teacher candidates, district partners and faculty. Pacific Oaks understands the urgent need to increase the number of highly qualified bilingual teachers to support the growing number of bilingual programs and emerging bilingual students in California schools.
The bilingual authorization program is aligned with the college’s core values ââand mission to prepare students to be culturally intelligent change agents serving diverse communities. Candidates apply theory and pedagogy learned in the courses through 75 hours of practical experience in high quality bilingual environments. Applicants for bilingual authorization will receive ongoing support from experts in bilingual education during their classes, a highly qualified teacher mentor during their fieldwork and clinical practice, and an expert pedagogical advisor in bilingual education.
Bilingual authorization is available after graduation as an add-on for teachers with a valid California Preliminary or Clear Teaching Diploma who have obtained authorization to teach English learners. Pacific Oaks applicants can obtain bilingual authorization at the same time as they apply for their preliminary multi-subject teaching credentials. Admission to either path will require a language proficiency check (reading, writing and speaking) through successful completion of the CSET: World Languages ââSubtest III in Spanish or Mandarin.
All applicants for bilingual authorization will complete 75 hours of supervised internship in a bilingual environment. Concurrent applicants will also complete eight of their 16 weeks of student teaching in a bilingual setting. For more information, applicants are encouraged to contact [email protected]
