Oklahoma Student Results Crash Amid School Closures | New

Among all students and grades tested, the share of students who achieved grade level or above in mathematics increased from 31.9% in 2019 to 22.1% in 2021. In mathematics, it increased from 33. 4% to 24.8%, while in science it increased from 34.5%. at 29.7 percent.

The drop in marks in grade three was significant, and these students should continue to struggle for years to come, officials noted.

“It’s really, really important for us to think about the third year, the fact that these are second year students who were disturbed by the last part of their last four months in second year (in the spring of 2020),” said Hofmeister.

In 2019, state tests showed that 39% of third-graders in Oklahoma performed at the grade level or better in English, but only 25% achieved the same results in 2021. In math, 43 % of third-graders had results at grade level and above in 2019, but only 29% did so in 2021.

Student achievement levels are generally higher in the early years of elementary school and decline as students progress through school in subsequent years. This trend preceded the COVID shutdown but could worsen further following the loss of learning related to COVID, officials noted.

For example, 29% of seventh graders were at school level in English Language Arts in 2019. By 2021, this share has plunged to 19%.
