The College of Engineering at the University of Alabama hosted an event called E-Day on Friday. It was an opportunity for future students to learn about the university’s engineering and computer science program.
Students could tour the College of Engineering, meet faculty, and learn about student organizations within college departments.
The event also provided information on the admissions process, housing options, and financial aid. Each department has set up tables to showcase some of its best research and teach students that science can be fun.
Many graduate students who recently obtained their doctorate were excited to share their love of science and engineering with students.
“I love talking to kids,” said Amanda Holloman, a recent Ph.D. graduate. “I love talking to parents and introducing them to a whole new side of computing because when we think of computing, we think of algorithms, networks, variables. It’s so much deeper than that. So much different things can be accomplished here.
Holloman said it’s important for students to understand that they can make an impact.
“Talking to the students and asking them, what do you want to solve? What do you see in the world? It really allows them to understand what they see in themselves and their abilities and how they can connect to that,” she said.
