Educator and researcher Sarah Owens appointed to Chair in Design of Alumni Communications

Sarah Owens has been elected president of the Graduate School of Design Communication Design. She began her role on July 1, 2021.

Owens joined the platform with extensive experience in education, research and leadership. She was recently professor of visual communication and visual culture at the Zurich University of the Arts in Switzerland, leading graduate programs and research units and supervising all teaching and research activities in the field of visual communication.

As president of the Graduate School of Communication Design, Owens oversees the MFA of Communication Design and the MS of the Packaging, Identity and Systems Design program and heads a department that includes approximately 175 students and 50 faculty members.

Owens has been teaching design programs since 2006 and has taught at all levels from undergraduate to doctoral level. Its approach to education focuses on the facilitation of dialogue and the exchange of ideas and is based on the knowledge and experience of the student. His main research interests are social and anthropological aspects of the history, production and distribution of visual artefacts. In particular, Owens is interested in marginalized epistemology and practice, issues of perception and representation, and education in times of uncertainty.

She chaired several international symposia and conferences (recently). Design as a common good, 2021) has directed and conducted third-party funded research projects on design practice, design education and hybrid publishing, and has edited and contributed to several volumes on the history and theory of design. Owens holds a PhD in Typography and Graphic Communication from the University of Reading, an MA in Design History (RCA) from the Royal University of Arts in London and the Victoria & Albert Museum, and an MA Associate in Communication Design at Applied University. I understand. Sciences Augsburg.
