Eberly College to Pilot New Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa .– From fall 2021 to spring 2022, the Penn State Eberly College of Science will pilot a new program that aims to provide under-represented students with opportunities to make the most of their degree and pursue STEM careers. through meaningful interactions with business partners.
Partner companies, including GlaxoSmithKline and Corning, will be exposed to the college’s more than 500 undergraduate and graduate students, be able to forge strategic relationships in environments conducive to networking and recruiting, and have the chance to present as industry leaders.
The program will connect partner companies with students from a wide range of research fields – spanning life sciences, physics and mathematics – through diversity-focused student organizations, including Penn Chapters State of the National Organization for the Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers. (NOBCChE), Society for the Advancement of Chicanos / Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), and Graduate Women in Science (GWIS).
“We are delighted to have GSK and Corning as corporate partners for the Diversity in STEM initiative,” said Kristin Finch, Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion. “This partnership allows Eberly students to develop meaningful relationships in the industry and to discover unique employment opportunities at their respective companies.”
The following events are scheduled for fall 2021:
Reverse Career Fair – September 21
At the reverse career fair, students will exhibit their own talents and skills for different employers to witness. This networking event will allow partner companies to interact with the different student organizations within Eberly.
Undergraduate Research Poster Exhibition – October 7
During the undergraduate research poster exhibition, partner companies will have a VIP session before the event opens to the public. This small group interaction will allow partner companies to engage with student presenters on a more intimate level.
Conversation on diversity in the workplace – November 10
The Corporate Diversity Conversation is a dialogue between partner companies and student organizations, focused on diversity and creating meaningful interactions and cultures in the workplace. This will include discussions led by representatives of the Employee Resource Group (ERG), providing students with information about their companies, the ERG orientation of their companies and the importance of these groups within companies.
