Destination USA: Accreditation to validate the programs
Last week we started a discussion on “accreditation” in our special thematic series on US higher education. We have seen how accreditation is a system of recognizing educational institutions and professional programs for their level of quality, performance and integrity and helps students select acceptable institutions for their applications. The article also referred readers to a database of accredited programs and institutions published by the U.S. Department of Education that they can visit before screening U.S. colleges and universities.
In addition to identifying an accredited university, it is also recommended that students identify university programs with professional accreditation. This programmatic or professional accreditation is usually granted by commissions managed by professional organizations in specific fields. Today, we are sharing with our readers the programmatic accrediting bodies for some top fields of study that Indian students choose in the United States.
Engineering: The professional accreditation body for the field of engineering is the Accreditation Council for Engineering and Technology (www.abet.org). The accreditation process at ABET is carried out by four different accreditation commissions based on the subfields of study within the discipline of engineering. Students can search for accredited engineering programs at https://amspub.abet.org/aps/name-search?searchType=institution.

Questions and answers
Q. I am applying for masters programs at US universities. How can I identify the cost of participating in the program? – Ravi Kumar
A. The websites of the universities under consideration are good sources for checking tuition, cost of living, and other expenses to determine the cost of attending a US university. This information can be found on the university’s admissions page or on the bursar’s web page (the bursar is a university’s budget and finance office). Be sure to take note of both tuition and other additional costs including the cost of accommodation, books and supplies, transportation, health insurance, personal expenses, etc. Additionally, note whether the tuition is for residents or not. residents (as an international student you will pay the non-resident fee). These costs vary depending on the type of institution, location and program of study.
Q. If applying to undergraduate programs in the US, from whom should we get the recommendation letter?
A. Letters of recommendation, sometimes also referred to as letters of support or letters of reference, are an essential part of undergraduate applications to American universities. Typically, higher education institutions in the United States require letters from a school counselor and sometimes from one or two teachers. Some institutions also accept additional recommendations from coaches or other recommenders. In cases where a school counselor is not available, students can ask the principal or another teacher appointed by the principal to write the letter. Recommendations should not be written by direct family members.
